Description

download_url suppresses PermissionError and NotADirectoryError throughout downloading and publication, then logs a successful download even when moving the file failed. This PR tracks successful completion of shutil.move and propagates these errors before publication completes. It retains the historical exemption for temporary-directory cleanup errors after successful publication, along with existing cache/hash checks.

This does not repair a partial destination left by a failed cross-filesystem move.

The Raises section documents when PermissionError and NotADirectoryError propagate, including destination setup and the move, and explains the retained suppression during temporary-directory cleanup after a successful move. The upstream note about the hash-type default is retained.

Historical validation

The existing handoff source-level receipts cover normal publication/cache hits, pre-publication errors, failed partial moves, hash rejection, and retained post-publication cleanup suppression. They were reused rather than rerun.

For the earlier documentation revision, an AST comparison with docstrings removed confirmed unchanged executable code, and git diff --check passed. A subsequent dev integration resolved an adjacent documentation conflict while retaining the upstream hash-default note and requested exception documentation. The final contribution diff was reviewed, Python syntax was checked, and the newly merged diff passed the whitespace check. Those are the receipts for the existing revision; they are not validation of the new refresh described below. No full MONAI integration suite was run.

Integration status

Refreshed this existing PR branch against dev at bbebca6f17cabf98ea5fb8ec5776eeacd10aa60d; the resulting head is 7eded2efa1f8b647ff82a009b279cc79ff017f7c. The contribution remains the publication-completion guard and its exception documentation in monai/apps/utils.py, with the upstream hash-default note retained. The final contribution diff was inspected against the integrated dev revision.

New integration validation: The merge applied cleanly, and comparison with the reviewed head d6edfb1f9fd41760ebeb95af6e00d682f7804b90 confirmed that monai/apps/utils.py is byte-for-byte unchanged. The final contribution diff against the integrated dev revision contains only that file. The newly integrated diff passed git diff --cached --check. Existing syntax and behavior receipts were reused; no tests or syntax checks on the unchanged file were rerun, and no full integration suite was run.

Hosted results for the resulting head, including DCO and the required checks: DCO succeeds. The Tests, documentation, CodeQL, and weekly-preview workflows each report action_required with zero jobs; hosted execution remains gated. The required DeepSource Docker, Python, and Shell contexts succeed; pre-commit.ci is pending. The required build-docs, dependency/platform matrix, packaging, and static-check contexts therefore are not established as passing. GitHub reports the branch conflict-free and current with dev; merge readiness still requires the active rule’s approvals, resolved review threads, and successful required checks.

The historical behavior receipts above remain evidence for unchanged behavior and have not been counted as newly executed checks.

Types of changes

  • Bug fix: report unsuccessful download publication accurately.
  • New upstream tests added.
  • Integration tests passed locally.

📝 Walkthrough

download_url now tracks whether the downloaded file has moved to its destination. It re-raises PermissionError and NotADirectoryError if the move has not completed. It continues to suppress those exceptions during cleanup after a successful move.

The description now distinguishes the earlier receipts from this refresh. The exception-documentation request was already addressed; this update brings the branch forward under the current dev rule.
